Understanding “Period Poverty”
The idea of menstrual health encompasses not only the physical and mental well-being, public health, and medical aspects of people who menstruate, but also broadly extends to whether they can afford adequate and hygienic sanitary products and maintain the right to normal social participation throughout their menstrual cycle.
In fact, Period Poverty presents a significant challenge to many menstruators, even in affluent and prosperous Hong Kong. Period Poverty refers to the inability to afford and access menstrual products, sanitation and hygiene facilities and education and awareness to manage menstrual health. Usually, it presents in the form of a lack of access to appropriate and hygienic sanitary products, having to reduce the frequency of changing sanitary products, the resulting health issues, and the hindrance of normal social engagement.
In Hong Kong, dedicated charities exist to support individuals who face period poverty and other menstruation-related difficulties. For instance, Free Periods Hong Kong aims to eradicate period poverty by proactively supplying free eco-friendly menstrual products and menstrual education to foreign domestic helpers, deaf individuals, ethnic minorities, and other low-income women. This directly alleviates the long-term financial burden of purchasing disposable sanitary products, enabling them to overcome period poverty and manage their menstrual health with dignity and self-assurance.
